Holiday Dates

Tisha B’Av, an annual day of fast occurring on the 9th of Av, primarily commemorates the destruction of the first and second Temples, first by the Babylonians in 586 BCE and the second by the Romans in 70 CE. Both were destroyed on the ninth of Av. Tisha B’Av is also a day of mourning to commemorate the many tragedies of the Jewish people. It usually falls in July or August and is similar to Yom Kippur in that besides the disallowance of food or drink, we avoid daily pleasures.
